{Book Review} The Book Of Joan…

I’ve always been a fan of Joan Rivers, she had this accept me as I am kind of quality about her. I’ve never met her, but watching her on television made me feel like I knew her. I love how she would make bold statements… drop that invisible mic… and then walk off her invisible stage.

Melissa Rivers, Executive Producer, Daughter of Joan Rivers, and now Author of the book titled “The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief and Manipulations, allows us once again to be spectators of the life of Joan Rivers with the same accept me as I am kind of quality.

When I do a review of a book, I usually read the book before attending any type of author events, but in this rare case, I had the privilege to watch the live interview of Joan Rivers and Hoda Kotb courtesy of 92Y before reading the book. The interview really got me excited about the book and really made me understand the meaning behind the book.

N23602567ow this book by no means is a tell all story of Joan Rivers.
No, it’s definitely not a Memoir. It is what it is…Tales of Mirth, Mischief and Manipulations, accompanied by photos and humorous essays. A book written in the style, that I believe… Joan Rivers would have really appreciated.  The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief and Manipulations, is a reminder that we are not alone when it comes to our mothers. This book made me laugh… and at times it made me cry. I definitely felt a little sentimental of the fact that the world lost an amazing woman.

Writing a book soon after her mother’s death could not… by any means…have been an easy task for Melissa Rivers…And yet she did it with such flair. I couldn’t put this book down, and I read it in one sitting. Any book that does that… definitely has earned its place on my book shelf. . I think this was definitely a wonderful tribute to her mother, and definitely a must read. The Book Of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief and Manipulations said so much about the relationship of a mother and a daughter, that at times, when there were no longer words on a particular page, our hearts filled in the blanks.

Beat Back the Blogging Blues

The Daily Post

The blogging wells run dry for us all from time to time. There’s regular ol’ “I can’t think of anything to say” writer’s block, when you want to blog but can’t — we’ve written about that before. And then there’s a deeper sense of blogging ennui, when you don’t even want to log in and wonder if it’s time to throw in the blogging towel.

It might be the right time to call it quits; there’s no rule that blogs have to be eternal or that you always need to blog in the same place, and it might be time to close one chapter and start something else. But it might just be the kind of lull we all experience in long-term projects; in all things, from work to parenting to creative pursuits to our favorite TV shows, our enthusiasm waxes and wanes.

Here are six ways to push through the wane and…

The Tony Awards

With celebrities and Tony Award nominees gracing the Red Carpet with all that glitters and sparkles, it was definitely more than just the neon lights of Broadway that lit up New York City last night. And it’s no surprise, especially when you have Vogue Editor of Chief Anna Wintour at the helm giving the Red Carpet a little face lift, after declaring the 2014 Red Carpet event a fashion disaster.

However, it was the Tony Award winners that reign supreme. Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth co-hosted the 69th annual Tony Awards last night, and The Red Carpet event was live streamed, and the Tony Awards aired on CBS from Radio City Music Hall. I think it is now safe to say that the Drama Desk Award that took place just a week ago was a good barometer for last night winners.

However, I think many were surprise that the musical “Fun Home” walked away the big winner last night, triumphing over the presumed favorite “An American in Paris” for best musical. In addition history was made last night, the first female writing team (Fun Home) won in their categories. And Last but not least, Kelli O’Hare finally broke her losing streak and won best leading actress in a musical for The King and I. So Broadway lovers, the moment we all have waited for has come and gone, leaving us with the excitement of what is yet to come next year. The full list of winners below:

Ben Vereen Still Has Some Magic To Do

With the Tony Awards only one day away…
The day all theaters lovers near and far have waiting for…
Ben Vereen is living proof that we all have a little Broadway in all of us. In his interview yesterday with Mo Rocca of CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood, the Broadway veteran and Tony Award winner let us all in on a little secret …The arts can heal anything – and Everything.

Despite all his trials and tribulations, Ben Vereen’s multifaceted career speaks for itself, and spans over 40 years in the United States, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean.  Beyond the neon lights of Broadway, Ben Vereen’s acting credits continue to give us memorable roles that stand the test of time, such as the unforgettable Chicken George in Roots, and Louis Armstrong in Louis Armstrong – Chicago Style, and in more recent television shows, such as How I Met Your Mother and Hot in Cleveland.

Most recently, Ben Vereen appeared in the film “Time Out of Mind” with Richard Gere. Time Out of Mind is a film about a New York man force into homelessness and tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter. The film which was played at the New York Film Festival last year will be released in September. In addition, Ben Vereen recently appeared in the film “Top Five” with Chris Rock. Top Five is a film about a New York City comedian and film star, who has to confront his past and comedic career after doing an interview with a journalist. The film was screened in the Special Presentations section of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and was released on December 12, 2014. The lecture circuit has also become an integral part of Ben Vereen’s career, he is one of the Nation’s most requested speakers among audiences of all ages.

In addition, his philanthropy work includes “The Ben Vereen Awards Program” which gives talented high school musical theater students a chance to compete for the top prize of a $10,000 college scholarship. So what’s on the horizon for Ben Vereen?  Ben Vereen is busy developing his one-man show for Broadway, with an expected Broadway debut in 2016.

Without a doubt… Ben Vereen continues to leave his footprints in the sands of time and continues to captivate his audiences where ever he goes. Definitely leaving us all breathless…and yearning for more… of that special magic. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Broadway Sunday morning, then to start it with the legendary, and everyone’s favorite spiritual enforcer… Ben Vereen.

Ben Vereen’s interview with Mo Rocca will broadcast Sunday, June 7 (9:00 AM, ET) on the CBS Television Network. The Tony Award will also be hosted by CBS on Sunday, June 7, live from Radio City Music Hall at 8 p.m. ET

Ben Vereen performing in the Broadway Show “Pippin”

About the singer, dancer, actor, and philanthropist Ben Vereen

A singer, dancer, and actor known for his dramatic performances in theater, Ben Vereen has performed on television, in films, and on stage. Born in Miami in 1946, Vereen credits most of his success to his mother. His father worked in a paint factory while his mother worked as a maid. His mother was born in Louisiana and would recount how the blues singers and jazz musicians would entertain the workers during lunch breaks on the plantation. His mother would sing the blues as she reminisced about the past, thus Ben Vereen’s interest in music was born. His first performance was a solo at the age of four in the Baptist church where his father was the deacon. Later, he joined a quartet at the church, a group that had women weeping in the aisles during their performances. It was these performances that led Vereen to believe he had a calling to be a singer. After graduating from the High School of Performing Arts with no openings in dance or theater, Vereen entered the Pentecostal Theological Seminary. After six months he realized he was not to be a seminarian and again pursued his theatrical career.
At the age of 18 Vereen made his New York debut in Prodigal Son. In 1969 he joined the cast of Hair and eventually played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, a role that earned him the Theatre World Award. He went on to perform in Pippin, earning a Tony Award. His film credits include Funny Lady and All That Jazz. Besides his unforgettable stage and screen performances, Vereen has also used his talents on television. He won an Emmy Award for his 1978 TV special Ben Vereen… His Roots. During the ’80s he made appearances on several TV series including Webster and the talent contests You Write the Songs and Your Momma Don’t Dance. In the sitcom Webster he played Webster’s (Emmanuel Lewis) uncle, and frequently danced and sang on the show. In the late ’80s Vereen was emotionally drained after the death of his daughter, and contemplated suicide. After receiving help for his emotional problems, he bounced back, performing once again on Broadway in Jelly’s Last Jam and on television in the USA series Silk Stalkings. Despite the many obstacles in his career, Ben Vereen has achieved success as a performer, singer, and actor, receiving both the American Guild of Variety Artists’ George M. Cohen Award and the NAACP’s Image Award.

So Who Needs The Drama Anyway?

There was a lot of Drama going on last night in New York City.
The Drama Desk Awards honoring Broadway, Off- Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions was held last night at 8p.m. at The Town Hall in New York City with host Laura Benanti.

Now if you couldn’t attend the precursor to the Tony Awards, The Drama Desk Award, which is often dubbed The Golden Globe of Theatre, was livestreamed courtesy of its hosts TheaterMania.

The off-Broadway Production Hamilton, walked away with an impressive total of seven awards. This Broadway bound musical received 13 nominations, the most of any production of the season. Walking away with the award for Outstanding Musical, the first time off-Broadway production has bested its Broadway competitors in this category… and this hasn’t happen since 1983. Unfortunately Hamilton is not eligible for a Tony Award nomination because it has yet to open on Broadway.

Another big winner of the evening… walking away with six awards was the production The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, earning the top prize for Outstanding Play. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has been nominated for six awards at the Tony Awards next Sunday, and this production is considered the front-runner for best play.

An American in Paris who received 12 nominations, walked away with four awards, including an award for its choreography. And receiving only 2 nominations, the production The King and I, walked away with the award for Best Outstanding Revival of a Musical.
