UrbanWorld Film Festival “A Ballerina’s Tale” Closing Night

“Right now, there is a fundamental disrespect inherent in the distribution and amplification of films.  There is a cinema segregation in how films are seen and not seen.  What we’re saying is, we’re not going to depend on thise things anymore.”

–Ava DuVerney, Award-Winning Filmmaker/Founder, ARRAY {Urbanworld Alumni}

While on the Red Carpet I had an opportunity to talk to Jaleel White a guy who needs no introduction…but just in case you do….Jaleel White is known for his character Steve Urkel in the hit television show Family Matters. Now all grown up, Jaleel White talks about his career as an actor, writer, soon to be a producer, and how Muhammad Ali has inspired him by paving the path for others.

While Jaleel White and I talked about his aspiration and inspiration, another guy who doesn’t need any introduction, rapper, record producer, poet, occasional actor and activist David Banner and I, discussed health topics, his daily practice of respecting his body, how meditation fits into his daily regime, and how Muhammad Ali inspired him to be the best in everything he does.

Just a few short months ago Tyrese Gibson made it official during his New York City Press Tour that Black Rose will be his last solo album.  During his press tour visit to Aol Headquarters in Noho many of us, including myself, had the privilege to listen to a very inspirational interview about the trials and tribulations and the journey of Tyrese Gibson that give birth to Black Rose the album and Black Rose the soon to be released book.

But it was the music video “Shame” and the anticipation of the upcoming short film “Shame” that revealed not only Tyrese Gibson strength as a singer… but once again reaffirmed his strength as actor.  Tyrese Gibson and Academy Award® winner Jennifer Hudson star in Shame, a Paul Hunter film produced by Denzel Washington. He wants to do right by his wife and their children but, his struggle with drugs and alcohol test the strength of his fidelity and their relationship. A conversation with Gibson will follow the screening. Gibson will also serve as the ambassador for this year’s festival.

“I’m honored to serve as the ambassador of the 2015 Urbanworld Film Festival and to premiere my short film Shame in such a creative and exciting environment. I strive to create art across all mediums that supports and showcases our diverse landscape and Urbanworld is the perfect partner as they actively and significantly do the same.
