Fashion’s biggest night of the year, The Met’s Costume Institute Benefit, also known as The Met Gala, took place last night in New York City, in celebration of the opening of the spring 2017 exhibition, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between. Tom Brady, Gisele Bundchen, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour were Co-Chairs, while Rei Kawakubo and Ambassador Caroline Kennedy served as Honorary Chairs.
There were no shortage of show stopping designs, celebrities, models, and fashion designers on the red carpet last night. Some guests decided to wear Rei Kawakubo inspired designs by other designers, paying homage to Rei Kawakubo, the Met Gala honoree. However, Barbadian singer, songwriter, and actress, Robyn Rihanna Fenty, better known as Rihanna, kept with the theme of the Met Gala, and stole the show with a Rei Kawakubo designed Comme des Garçons dress.
The exhibition will be The Met’s Costume Institute first monographic show on a living designer since the Yves Saint Laurent exhibition in 1983, featuring approximately 150 examples of Kawakubo’s designs for Comme des Garçons, dating from the early 1980s to her most recent collection.
The Metropolitan Museum spring 2017 exhibition, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, will be on view from May 4-September 4, 2017. The exhibition is made possible in part by Condé Nast.
